As the blood is pushed through your arterial channels, it needs to be regulated in terms of pressure. If the pressure gets too great, as is the case with hypertension, then you can damage your arteries and make them lose their elasticity.

For an average adult, a normal blood pressure range is generally regarded to be 120/80. This is what the medical community considers to be the ideal reading.

The more important number between the two is the diastolic number. When you see it above 80 on a regular basis, you’re most likely suffering from hypertension. While it is true that blood pressure readings can fluctuate frequently throughout the day and also while you are going through various activities and emotions, but when your reading are consistently above 120/80 during times of rest, you’re considered to have hypertension.

The pressure of the blood changes in each of us throughout life, and on a minute-to-minute basis. It tends to get higher as we age, and is usually lowest when we sleep. As we go through a normal day, it fluctuates and becomes elevated in response to stress, pain, hormonal levels, meals and exercise. These are normal responses to our environment.

Almost 33% of Americans have Hypertension. It is often called the “Silent Killer” because, many times, there are no noticeable symptoms. Years can pass and people have no clue that anything is going wrong. Yet inside of their bodies, they are being damaged every day. Chronic hypertension can cause coronary heart disease, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke and more.

You can take steps to reduce your blood pressure if you find it to be unnaturally high. Seek professional help immediately. Prescription drugs may be necessary to initially control the hypertension, but a change in lifestyle is the best method for reducing the blood pressure levels.

• Increase your physical activity. Whenever you begin an exercise program, work with your physician to design a program that manages to increase your heart rate without putting too much strain on it.. Increased fitness reduces blood pressure numbers.
• Lose weight.
• Reduce cholesterol and plaque build up in the vessels
• RELAX! Stress, particularly unresolved stress, creates high blood pressure
• Change your diet. There are several food that actually lower your cholesterol and reduce your weight, factors for hypertension.
