Anxiety Disorder is a relatively common anxiety problem that begins when we experience anxiety on a regular basis. Virtually everyone has occasional bouts of anxiety, or anxious thought patterns. In contrast, GAD is a state of periodic and elevated anxiety, often characterized by excessive thinking and dwelling on the “what ifs”. As a result, you may feel that there’s no way out of the vicious cycle of anxiety and worry. In short, you probably have general anxiety disorder if you have regular or disruptive bouts of anxiety.
Most people who experience an anxiety or panic attack describe symptoms which echo those which accompany a heart attack, such as heart palpitations, chest pain or pressure, dizziness and breathing difficulty. In fact, the symptoms of a panic attack and a heart attack can mimic one another so closely that many people experiencing their first panic episode wind up in the ER.
The primary difference between a heart attack, which is a physiological condition, and a panick attack, is that the latter is the fear of the unknown. This makes getting to the cause of anxiety induced attacks harder than physical conditions, or even phobias, which are the fear of a known entity.
The primary types of anxiety disorder which can underlay panic attacks are:
- General Anxiety Disorder
- Panic Disorder
- Social Anxiety Disorder
Panic attacks may also relate to post traumatic stress disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. However, of the three aforementioned types, each may have a distinct set of symptoms. Successful treatment may also be predicated on correctly diagnosing the cause of the anxiety.
Anxiety disorders brought on by stress can be treated in a variety of ways. Treatments can include medications, talk-therapy, and other psychological assessments. Your team of healthcare professionals will be able to look at the different parts of your life that may be contributing to your high levels of stress and anxiety. While anxiety and stress disorders can be caused by external influences, such as work or finances, they can also be genetic. Finding out and understanding the various factors that are influencing your stress and anxiety levels is an important part of anxiety and stress management and care.
